Vanilla planifolia Vanilla Bean
(0)
$22.00
Vanilla Orchid, also known as the Vanilla Vine, is a tropical climbing orchid prized for producing the vanilla beans used to flavour desserts, beverages, and perfumes around the world. Native to Mexico and Central America, this fascinating plant develops long, glossy green leaves and aerial roots that allow it to climb trees, trellises, or other supports. The orchid produces delicate, creamy green to pale yellow flowers that open for only a short time. In its native habitat, the flowers are pollinated by the Melipona bee, a species found only in Mexico. As these bees are absent in Australia and most other countries, successful fruit production relies on careful hand pollination, which must be carried out within approximately 12 hours of the flower opening. Once pollinated, the slender green pods take around nine months to mature before they can be harvested and cured to develop the rich aroma and flavour associated with vanilla. Vanilla Orchid can be grown successfully indoors, in greenhouses, conservatories, or in frost-free tropical and subtropical gardens. Note: Vanilla plants demand consistent temperatures ranging from 23 to 30 degrees Celsius to cultivate vanilla pods.
