Ground Covers

Scleranthus biflorus Lime Lava is a distinctive, low-growing Australian native groundcover that forms vibrant, lime-green cushions with a soft, moss-like appearance. Its dense, sculptural habit allows it to naturally mould around rocks and contours, creating a flowing, “green lava” effect in the landscape. Ideal for landscaping, it works beautifully in rockeries, between pavers, or cascading over edges, and is equally suited to pots where its unique texture can be appreciated up close. It can be used to contrast with other plants or as a striking specimen on its own. This eye-catching plant is perfect for adding texture, softness, and a contemporary, architectural feel to garden spaces, especially where a low-maintenance, lawn-like look is desired without foot traffic.

Jelly Baby Grevillea is a mounding, dense ground cover with soft grey-green foliage. Iridescent deep pink, jellybean-like flowers appear mainly in winter and spring, attracting native wildlife, bees, nectar-eating birds and butterflies. Jelly Baby excels as a groundcover and performs well when grown in rockeries or as part of a rocky landscape. Trim to maintain shape after flowering.

Grevillea Carpet Layer is a dense, spreading evergreen ground cover valued for its hardy nature and long-lasting floral display. The attractive dark green, serrated foliage forms a thick mat across the soil surface, making it an excellent choice for suppressing weeds and covering large areas with minimal maintenance. From winter through spring and often into summer, it produces masses of soft pink, toothbrush-like flowers that create a vibrant and eye-catching display. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to nectar-feeding birds, adding colour and activity to the garden during the cooler months when flowering plants can be limited.
A light prune after flowering will help maintain a neat appearance and encourage dense, fresh growth. If fertilising, use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser to ensure healthy development.

A popular Australian native, Scaevola White Carpet puts on a terrific flower show from spring to autumn. The long-lived, spreading ground cover has a thick carpet of tight, mid-green foliage with clusters of fan-shaped, white flowers. It looks incredible planted around the house in hanging baskets or as a ground cover where landscapes need a pop of colour. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance, and feed with a slow-release native fertiliser in spring.
