Populus nigra Italica, known as Lombardy Poplar, is a large, narrowly columnar deciduous tree with a high tolerance to exposure. Crimson male catkins appear before the leaves open in early spring. The leaves are diamond-shaped and begin life as a glowing bronze, mature to bright green and finally age to a brilliant gold in autumn. The Lombardy Poplar is a tall and vigorously-growing tree, and is often seen lining country roads, driveways and avenues, and in paddocks where it acts as a useful windbreak.
