Smyrna is a Turkish variety of quince with large, fragrant, bright yellow fruit. It has dark green foliage and masses of small pink-white flowers before fruiting. The fruit, with its pale yellow flesh, is one of the few that must be cooked as it is too tart, hard and unpalatable to eat raw, and is perfect for jam, cider, chutneys and sauces. Smyrna is self-pollinating. Ideal for orchards and edible or cottage gardens.
Soil: Most well-drained soils.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade. Tolerates frost and drought though it needs protection during hot dry winds to avoid the loss of fruit.
Size: Height 4-10m x width 4-10m
