Niobe is a rare, compact protea with creamy feathery flower bracts, touched with black edging, surrounding a dark centre. Niobe flowers from autumn to spring; providing a stunning floral display to the garden during the colder months and supplying food for birds and bees. Plant as a feature, into tubs, shape into a low hedge or mass plant for a stunning effect. As with all proteas, Niobe is a fantastic cut flower. Be sure to use a native soil mix when planting as exotic potting mix or exotic fertiliser will kill them.

Soil: Well-drained soil. Use mounds for planting in areas of heavy clay.

Metrosideros collina Little Ewan is a hardy, compact shrub with dark green leaves displaying fiery red new growth and masses of small, bright crimson flowers in spring and summer, attracting birds and bees. It can be grown as a container plant, minimum maintenance low hedge, as a dense foreground shrub, or in general landscaping where very hardy plants are required. Little Ewan is absolutely perfect for those coastal gardens!

The stunning evergreen camellia Something Special bursts forth with masses of semi-double flowers in shades of pinks and creamy whites during cooler months. Something Special has a vigorous, upright growth habit, is long-lived and widely used for hedging, as a feature plant and for topiary and espalier. Camellias are hardy once established and respond well to pruning to maintain a compact growth habit.

Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic soil. A potting mix rich with peat moss or humus is ideal when added at the time of planting.
Conditions: Tolerates full sun to part shade. Drought, frost and coastal tolerant.

Portuguese Laurel is a hardy evergreen shrub or small tree. The dense covering of dark glossy green leaves - lime green when new - provide an ideal backdrop for other plants in the garden. This species is particularly showy in spring when in full flower, with small white, beautifully perfumed flowers. After flowering, reddish-green cherry-like fruits appear, turning dark purple/black as they ripen in late summer or early autumn. With its compact form, Portuguese Laurel is a fantastic hedging/screening plant that can be kept clipped from one to four metres or left to grow into a small spreading tree. It is also great as a large standard. Be mindful that no humans or pets ingest the berries.

Soil: Moist, well-drained soil. Will thrive in poor, shallow, or chalky soil
Conditions: Extremely versatile. Tolerates exposed coastal gardens, forceful, salt-laden winds, and intense sunlight to alpine gardens with freezing winters. Copes with cold/frost to -15°c.

Pixie Protea (Protea pudens x longifolia) is a compact protea with abundant pink cup-shaped flowers with a darker, salmon-hued centre. The beautiful Pixie flowers from autumn to spring and is ideal for small areas, rockeries and containers. The dense protea is versatile and can be planted as a feature, shaped into a low hedge or mass planted for a stunning visual effect. Blooms last well and are perfect for cut flower arrangements for the home. Be sure to use a native soil mix when planting as exotic potting mix and fertiliser will kill them.

Lavandula LaDiva Papillon Romance is a beautifully compact semi-dwarf English Lavender. Featuring softly fragrant grey-green leaves and tall purple-blue flower heads, this aromatic variety will add a fragrant dimension wherever it is planted. English Lavender is suited for culinary, perfumery and oil production making this beautiful shrub extremely popular. Perfect for cottage gardens and stepover hedging, rockeries and pots, the cut flowers may be dried and used in flower arrangements or potpourri. Lightly prune and fertilise after the main flowering flush to encourage a neat compact growth habit and repeat flushes of flowers.

Soil: Well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil that is slightly alkaline. It does not like wet soil.

Petite Ruby forms a neat shrub with small foliage and dainty bright pink flowers that add colour to the garden during autumn and winter. The Petite series of camellia are well known for their compact shape, small leaves and abundance of small flowers. Prune after flowering to desired height and shape to encourage a bushy growth habit and the future development of flowers. Petite Ruby is ideal for hedging, screening, borders, garden beds or patios.

Soil: Prefers to be grown in humus-rich, well-draining soil.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade to full shade. The petite series of camellias can be grown Australia-wide.

The Camellia Japonica Black Tie produces a rich display of dense, glossy, dark green foliage and formal, deep red double blooms. Black Tie flowers from late winter to spring adding a splash of colour and contrast to the garden. An excellent choice for cut flowers, the beautiful deep red flowers are striking in the vase and in the garden. With a compact growth habit, camellias are ideal for screens, hedging, large containers and espaliers. Lightly prune every couple of years to create density and maintain shape. Fertilise using a slow release fertiliser specific to camellias in spring.

Soil: Well-drained, acidic soil. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks.
Conditions: Semi-shade position in the garden. Protect from the harsh afternoon sun and strong winds. Prefers a cooler, less-humid climate. Frost hardy.
