An extremely attractive new introduction, Cercis Merlot is a fantastic small tree that shows off rich purple foliage and an improved branch structure than other varieties of this popular and showy family of trees. Clusters of bright pink flowers smother the bare stems in early spring followed by large and glossy heart-shaped foliage in a rich purple to plum colouring in the summer months, aging to brilliant yellow and orange tonings in autumn. Foliage colour will be at its best in plants grown in full sun. Cercis Merlot is highly adaptable and is more tolerant of warmer climates than many other Cercis forms and prefers deep, well-drained soil and a position in full sun or partial shade. Drought and frost tolerant once established but best results when adequate water is provided during dry periods.
