Hydrangea macrophylla Nigra, often called the Black Stemmed Hydrangea, is a truly distinctive and elegant garden shrub. Its striking combination of deep black stems, lush green foliage and softly coloured blooms creates beautiful contrast from summer through to autumn. Flowers may appear pink-green or pale blue-green, with colour intensity influenced by soil pH—alkaline soils encourage pink tones, while acidic soils produce blue. As the season cools, Nigra’s foliage turns soft yellow and falls,revealing its dramatic dark stems through winter. With its classic mop-top blooms and sturdy stems, this old-fashioned favourite is also excellent for cutting and floral arrangements, bringing timeless charm both indoors and out.
