Schinus areira Peppercorn Tree
$45.00
The foliage of the Peppercorn Tree is finely textured and feathery and when crushed, the leaves release a strong, aromatic fragrance with natural insect-repellent qualities. Tiny, inconspicuous white flowers appear in late spring, followed in late summer by cascading clusters of small red drupes that hang like strings of beads throughout the tree. Fruit production is weather-dependent, with drier conditions producing the heaviest displays. In warmer regions, the Peppercorn Tree is an evergreen with a graceful spreading, weeping habit, while in colder areas it may become deciduous. With age, it develops wonderfully gnarled trunks adorned with characterful burls, adding strong ornamental appeal. Highly tolerant of heat, drought and coastal conditions, the Peppercorn Tree makes a superb shade tree with the added benefit of insect-repelling foliage.
