Protea Christine is a compact protea with an eye-catching winter display of deep pink flowers that look spectacular both on the shrub and in a vase. Christine is ideal for small areas, rockeries and containers. Protea Christine fits in well with low maintenance, low water use gardens, and as with all proteas, Christine is perfect as a cut flower. Avoid exotic potting mixes and fertilizers as these products can kill proteas.

Soil: Well-drained soil. With clay soils, create a mound to facilitate drainage.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade. Drought, coastal and moderately frost tolerant.

Also known as Lion’s Tail, Leonotis leonurus Orange is native to South Africa. It is a large evergreen shrub with furry foliage that shows off tiered whorls of bright orange tubular flowers. Lions Tail will flower for most of the year in warmer climates, peaking in summer in cooler climates. Excellent for the hot and dry areas of most gardens, Lions Tail can be used for hedges and borders as well as pots and containers. Prune back after flowering to maintain shape and a compact bushy habit.

Chorizema cordatum x varium Yellow is a small evergreen Australian native shrub with lime-green heart-shaped leaves and amazing yellow/orange and lilac pea-shaped flowers. Flowers are produced from winter through to summer. This easy-to-grow ornamental is suitable for garden beds, borders, and containers and will grow as a climber if given adequate support. Prune after flowering to maintain compact growth.

A fast-growing variety of the Western Red Cedar, Thuja plicata Fastigiata has a compact conical, upright growth habit. This cultivar makes a very attractive hedge with its aromatic dark green foliage and is ideal for screening in a narrow area. Fastigiata responds well to pruning, even reshooting from bare wood after a hard prune.

Physocarpus opulifolius Angel Gold is a medium deciduous shrub with bright golden yellow/green, heart-shaped foliage and masses of tiny white flowers that appear in tight clusters along the branches in spring. Perfect for adding a splash of colour to the garden and does equally well in garden beds or containers. Fertilise when planting and again after new growth appears.
