Casuarina glauca, or Swamp She Oak, is a fast-growing tree that returns nitrogen to the soil and is very good for remediating areas affected by salinity and seasonal waterlogging. Suckering from the roots, the swamp oak can form dense stands of trees. A significant inconvenience in urban settings - the roots can invade underground water and sewer pipes if these are within 15m of the tree. Like other casuarinas, a beautiful feature of this tree is the gentle rustling sound it produces when the wind passes throught the foliage. Casuarina glauca is used mainly as a windbreak and in fuelwood woodlot plantations.
Soil: Thrives in most soils including waterlogged, saline sites.
Conditions: Full sun. It grows in or near brackish water along the banks of rivers and estuaries. Coastal, drought, frost and heat hardy.
Size: Height 8-10m x width 4-5m
