A cold-hardy deciduous citrus shrub, Poncirus trifoliata Flying Dragon is as ornamental as it is practical. This distinctive dwarf form features curving, contorted stems and dramatic twisted thorns — making it ideal for use as a striking specimen plant or an impenetrable security hedge. In spring, it bears small, lightly scented white blossoms, followed by fuzzy, orange-yellow fruit about the size of a ping pong ball. The fruit is filled with seeds and yields around 20% juice. Though the juice is sour, it makes an excellent flavouring, while the peel — bitter yet aromatic — is prized for marmalades and candied peel. Rich in natural pectin, it requires no added gelling agent for jellies. Even small trees can produce hundreds of fruit each season. Its trifoliate green leaves turn a brilliant orange in autumn before dropping to reveal the sculptural, twisted branches that make this tree so unique. The slow-growing Flying Dragon is ideal as a security barrier or privacy hedge, ornamental feature tree, bonsai subject or garden accent. Prune hard to maintain hedge height and density, or selectively prune to showcase its striking, contorted stems.
Soil: Well-drained soil.
Conditions: Full sun. Cold tolerant as it will survive extended periods of snow. Heat and coastal tolerant.
Size: Height 4m x width 3m
A true statement of elegance, Camellia Nuccio's Pearl is impressive in full flower. Spectacular, fully-double blooms with pure white petals edged with an orchid pink blush make a dazzling contrast against the glossy, dark green foliage. Nuccio's Pearl looks superb in a feature pot and also makes a wonderful hedge or espalier. Prune after flowering to desired height and shape as this will encourage a bushy growth habit and the future development of flowers
Soil: Prefers to be grown in humus-rich, well-draining soil.
Conditions: Morning sun to part shade. Drought, frost and coastal tolerant.
Size: Height 3-4m x width 2-3m
Taxus baccata, commonly known as English Yew or Common Yew, is a long-lived evergreen conifer admired for its dense, dark green foliage and classic conical shape. Native to Europe, southwestern Asia and northern Africa, it features soft, flat needles that remain attractive year-round, with fresh growth emerging a lighter green in spring. Male plants produce small scaly cones, while female plants develop striking scarlet berries that add ornamental appeal. Highly valued for formal hedging and topiary, English Yew responds exceptionally well to clipping and shaping, making it ideal for structured gardens, parterre designs, privacy screens and traditional landscapes. Although slow-growing, its longevity and refined appearance make it a worthwhile investment in the garden. Prune regularly to maintain a neat, compact form.
Note: All parts of the plant, particularly the seeds and foliage, are highly toxic to humans and animals including dogs, cats and horses.
Soil: Will tolerate most soils but likes a well-drained loam.
Conditions: Comfortable in any position in the garden. Once established will put up with harsh conditions, including drought.
