Taxus baccata, commonly known as English Yew or Common Yew, is a long-lived evergreen conifer admired for its dense, dark green foliage and classic conical shape. Native to Europe, southwestern Asia and northern Africa, it features soft, flat needles that remain attractive year-round, with fresh growth emerging a lighter green in spring. Male plants produce small scaly cones, while female plants develop striking scarlet berries that add ornamental appeal. Highly valued for formal hedging and topiary, English Yew responds exceptionally well to clipping and shaping, making it ideal for structured gardens, parterre designs, privacy screens and traditional landscapes. Although slow-growing, its longevity and refined appearance make it a worthwhile investment in the garden. Prune regularly to maintain a neat, compact form.
Note: All parts of the plant, particularly the seeds and foliage, are highly toxic to humans and animals including dogs, cats and horses.
Soil: Will tolerate most soils but likes a well-drained loam.
Conditions: Comfortable in any position in the garden. Once established will put up with harsh conditions, including drought.
Size: Height 15-20m x width 12-15m width
Coast Redwood, also known as the Californian Redwood, is a magnificent evergreen conifer renowned as the tallest tree species in the world, reaching over 100 metres in its native habitat. In Australian gardens and landscapes, it typically grows to around 30 metres, developing a tall, elegant form with a strong central trunk and gently weeping branches clothed in soft, feathery deep-green foliage. Faster-growing and more slender than the Giant Redwood, Coast Redwood combines impressive height with graceful beauty, making it a striking feature tree for large gardens, parks, avenues, and rural properties. As a monoecious species, it produces both pollen and seed cones on the same tree. Given its eventual size, Coast Redwoods should be planted 8–10 metres apart and allowed plenty of room to develop. It is also highly valued by bonsai enthusiasts, where its fine foliage and vigorous growth can be shaped into stunning miniature specimens.
Soil: Heavy, moist soils and will tolerate waterlogged clay soil.
Conditions: Full sun. Tolerates humidity and coastal conditions.
Size: Height 30m x width 20m
