Acmena Cherry Black is a glorious, fast-growing, evergreen lilly pilly displaying a beautiful contrast of deep cherry red/purple new growth with the dark green older foliage. Clusters of small white blossoms bloom in spring and summer, followed by edible mauve-coloured fruit. The fruits are bird-attracting; providing food for the native animals, and are edible for humans. These berries make a great garden snack, a salad topper, drink topper, or can be made into jams and chutneys. Perfect as a dense screen or hedge, Lilly Pilly Cherry Black responds well to light pruning and tolerates most conditions.

Soil: Well-drained soil with added enrichment. Mulch well after planting and water well in dry weather.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade. Drought, cold, frost and coastal tolerant.

Gordonia axillaris, or the Fried Egg Plant, is a hardy, quick-growing shrub or small tree with glossy oval leaves. Striking single, pure white, fragrant flowers with slightly ruffled petals and golden yellow stamens appear in autumn and winter. It makes a naturally attractive dome shape without the need for pruning. Gordonia axillaris is ideal as a feature shrub or as a screen and makes an excellent shade tree in small to medium gardens.

Soil: Slightly acidic soils of any type. Keep the soil moist until it is firmly established. Mulch well.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade. Tolerant of most climates except frost-prone areas.

Brunfelsia australis Sweet and Petite is a compact narrow evergreen with bright green foliage. In spring, open flowers that start out purple, mature to lilac and age to white, cover this happy bush until autumn. Great for specimen planting in small gardens, low hedging, and small enough to plant in a patio tub to appreciate the scent. Prune after flowering to maintain form and encourage a full flush of flowers next season. Fertilise during spring with a slow-release fertiliser.

Conditions: Full sun. Warm climates are preferred by this plant but worth a go in sheltered sites further south. Frost-free.

Kniphofia Poco Yellow has been specifically bred for very short grassy leaves and a tight, compact habit. Striking sulfur-yellow flowers are produced in profusion and appear all summer and through autumn - short, thin, strappy, green leaves hold these blooms strongly. Soil: A reliable tree and easy to grow, even on heavier soils. It does best on sandy soil but will establish and grow well on clay soil. Very useful for creeklines.

Metal Red Grevillea is a beautiful medium-sized shrub that flowers throughout autumn, winter and spring. The flower display is bountiful and features glossy metallic red flowers that attract both birds and bees. Metal Red will look amazing as a mass planting, or as a garden or pot feature. The species itself has proven to be particularly hardy, tolerating extended dry period, coastal and frosty conditions.

Geijera parviflora is an elegant, weeping tree known as Wilga or Australian Willow. A slow-growing small tree from inland Australia, it has attractive drooping branches and foliage that has a strong scent when crushed. The small star-shaped white flowers occur in clusters on branched stems during winter and spring. They are followed by small globular fruits containing glossy black seeds. Wilga is a useful tree as it can be used as stock feed on farms, as a shade tree and as a street tree for dry areas.

Conditions: Full sun to part shade. Drought tolerant.
