Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus torquata, or Coral Gum, is a small, hardy, evergreen tree with rough grey-coloured bark and pendulous blue-green foliage. It has dazzling coral pink flower displays throughout spring and summer, and intricately- textured red flower buds and gumnuts. This outstanding ornamental eucalypt makes a wonderful street, paddock, shade or garden specimen tree that requires little to no maintenance and will attract birds and other nectar-feeding fauna to the garden in profusion.

Soil: Grows in a variety of soils including poor, rocky and shallow.
Conditions: Full sun or part shade. It tolerates dry summers and urban environments and is coast, salt, drought and moderately frost resistant.

Eucalyptus virdis Winter Lights is the perfect choice for creating a dappled balance between light and shade in your garden. The long, thin leaves of the Winter Light give it a soft and willowy feel and a smooth clean trunk adds to the feeling of lightness. The foliage is all but hidden by nectar-rich fragrant, white blossoms in summer and autumn ~ which makes honey-eating birds happy residents. A graceful spreading growth habit and beautiful, multi-coloured bark are key features of the widespread and adaptable River Red Gum. The bark is smooth, white, grey or cream with patches of yellow-green, grey-green or pinkish-grey, and occasionally rough black bark accumulates at the base. The foliage is blue-green at maturity, and masses of white flowers appear from mid-winter to late summer, followed by ovoid woody fruit. River Red Gum trees are fast-growing, an excellent source of firewood, and its flowers are an attractant of bees and birds.

Smoky-grey leaves, a weeping habit and a stunning display of bright yellow flowers make Eucalyptus Woodwardii the perfect choice for a medium sized yard. Known also as the Lemon Flowered Gum or Gunguru, it will survive in very dry conditions and is a favoured source of pollen for honey production. The stems, flowers and gum nuts are perfect for cut flower arrangements and decoration.

Eucalyptus tetraptera is a handsome small to medium mallee, more shrub-like than tree, with an open, architectural habit and smooth grey to whitish bark that sheds in late summer and autumn to reveal a mottled underlayer. Its thick, leathery leaves frame the plant’s most striking feature: large, winged, square-shaped buds that develop from late winter and open to bright red to pink flowers through spring and summer. These showy blooms are followed by equally distinctive square gumnuts, attracting a range of pollinators. A hardy and unusual ornamental species, it grows well in containers, and older, straggly plants can be coppiced to ground level to promote fresh, vigorous new growth.

A medium-sized Australian native, Eucalyptus scoparia, or Wallangarra White Gum, originates from the elevated ranges around Wallangarra in northern New South Wales. The tree develops a broad, spreading crown with a softly weeping habit and narrow, glossy mid-green leaves that create beautiful dappled shade. In spring and early summer, it produces small white to cream flowers that attract insects and birds, followed by neat, oval gumnuts. With its striking white trunk and graceful form, the Wallangarra White Gum makes an excellent feature tree for larger gardens, a resilient street tree in open situations, or a dependable shade tree in rural landscapes.

Originally from the Pilbara region, Eucalyptus kingsmillii is a striking small tree or large shrub known for its graceful upright form, straight trunk, and fibrous grey-white bark that peels back to reveal a smooth finish beneath. From April to October, it produces eye-catching blooms ranging in colour from white-cream to soft red-pink, emerging from decorative pink-red buds.
