Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus preissiana, or Bell Fruited Mallee, is a compact, ornamental mallee eucalypt. Its umbrella-like leaf canopy consists of oval, blue-green, blunt-tipped leaves and bell-shaped seed pods. The standout feature of this native tree would have to be its bright, cheerfully yellow flowers, which bloom into a burst of stamens from winter to summer. The mallee is suitable for roadside plantings, screens and shade trees.

Conditions: Full sun. Moderately drought tolerant and hardy to most frosts. Pollution and coastal hardy though hard to maintain in tropical climates.

For bold colour on a compact tree, nothing beats Corymbia Ficifolia Baby Orange. In late spring-early summer, the canopy is covered in large, intensely orange gum flowers that age to oversized gum nuts. It produces numerous branches which form a dense canopy. An excellent tree for coastal and native gardens.

Eucalyptus polyanthemos is a medium to large, native tree suited to open spaces and broad streets. The distinctive, grey-blue-green leaves are a major part of the tree’s appeal, creating a dense, grey-coloured canopy. The tiny flower buds are produced in clusters and open to display delicate white blossoms which bees and native birds find irresistible. Suitable for planting under power lines but not on narrow nature strips.

Soil: Capable of tolerating difficult, dry stony soils.

The stunning Eucalyptus Torwood is commonly known as the 'Hybrid Coral Gum'. During the summer, but not limited to, it will produce clusters of large showy flowers that range from yellow through to shades of orange and scarlet. Torwood will attract nectar feeding birds and insects to the garden and makes an attractive shade tree.

Corymbia citriodora Scentuous is a dwarf lemon-scented gum tree. The leaves are narrow and highly aromatic when crushed - smelling strongly of lemon. Adding to its appeal, Scentuous features lovely cream/white flowers in summer, and pink-salmon-coloured bark year-round. Due to its smaller size, it is very versatile, making it great for gardens of all sizes and perfect for streetscapes. The bark and flowers add colour and native habitat all year round.

A medium-sized Australian native, Eucalyptus scoparia, or Wallangarra White Gum, originates from the elevated ranges around Wallangarra in northern New South Wales. The tree develops a broad, spreading crown with a softly weeping habit and narrow, glossy mid-green leaves that create beautiful dappled shade. In spring and early summer, it produces small white to cream flowers that attract insects and birds, followed by neat, oval gumnuts. With its striking white trunk and graceful form, the Wallangarra White Gum makes an excellent feature tree for larger gardens, a resilient street tree in open situations, or a dependable shade tree in rural landscapes.

Originally from the Pilbara region, Eucalyptus kingsmillii is a striking small tree or large shrub known for its graceful upright form, straight trunk, and fibrous grey-white bark that peels back to reveal a smooth finish beneath. Its distinctive, blue-grey aromatic foliage and ornamental flowers make it a standout in any landscape. From April to October, it produces eye-catching blooms ranging in colour from white-cream to soft red-pink, emerging from decorative pink-red buds. This seasonal display adds texture and colour over many months, making it perfect for parks, roadside plantings, or larger garden landscapes. Eucalyptus virdis Winter Lights is the perfect choice for creating a dappled balance between light and shade in your garden. The long, thin leaves of the Winter Light give it a soft and willowy feel and a smooth clean trunk adds to the feeling of lightness. The foliage is all but hidden by nectar-rich fragrant, white blossoms in summer and autumn ~ which makes honey-eating birds happy residents.
