Solanum Muricatum Pepino is a member of the potato family yet it has a delicious subtle flavoured fruit similar to a honeydew or rockmelon. The bush produces clusters of purple and white flowers, which look like those of the potato, at the end of the stems. Pepinos produce very pale green fruit which, as they grow larger and mature, develop purple stripes. At maturity, the fruit is a deep yellow. Perfect for adding to ice cream or fruit salad, as well as a great chutney or sauce. Pepino grows in a sprawling habit and makes an excellent ground cover plant. It tends to fruit better when grown over a trellis.

Fortunella japonica Kumquat is a charming small citrus tree prized for its distinctive fruits, which are oval-shaped, brightly coloured, and uniquely edible whole. The sweet rind contrasts beautifully with the tart, juicy flesh, creating a delicious balance of flavours in every bite. The tree itself features glossy dark green, elliptical leaves and bears clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that appear in spring and summer. These blossoms develop into vibrant orange to golden-yellow fruit that resembles miniature oranges. Kumquats are hardy and adaptable but thrive best with regular watering and feeding during the growing season. Fertilise with a citrus-specific fertiliser for best results. Prune after fruiting to maintain shape and encourage new growth.

The Malus domestica Granny Smith Apple produces a medium to large fruit with a tart-tangy flavour, bright green skin and crisp white flesh. Depending on your tastes, it is arguably one of the best apples for eating, and a good cooking apple because of its ability to retain flavour. The tree is a visual treat with a profusion of pink-white flowers in mid-spring. The blossoms are draped in clusters along the branches and are a magical sight to behold. As a bonus to the sumptuous display, the flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Granny Smith requires another apple variety close by for pollination. Suitable pollinators include Red Delicious, Gala and Pink Lady.

Rhubarb - it’s the vegetable that keeps on giving; plant it once and you’ll be harvesting delicious stems for many years to come! Its striking red stems and broad green leaves will make an attractive feature in your vegie garden too. Lift and divide your rhubarb every 4 to 5 years in winter and space out the crowns when you replant them because rhubarb plants will become congested by this time and will produce less stems of poorer quality. Rhubarb is often referred to as the 'pie plant' due to its use in pies but it also lends itself to a wide range of muffins, biscuits, cakes, as well as fancier desserts. Versatile in savory dishes, rhubarb provides a piquant base for marinades and condiments to pair with roasted meats and poultry. It is a highly productive fruit that can be harvested within 6 months.
