One of the more fascinating Japanese maples, Acer Palmatum Dissectum Germaines Gyration, with its natural twisting growth habit, makes an outstanding small specimen tree. It is the twisting or spiralling growth habit that makes this such a good feature tree. The foliage is light green from spring through summer, turning to shades of yellow to orange in autumn. Germaines Gyration can be used in the garden border as part of mixed planting and is suited to growing in containers in its formative stages although due to the eventual spread, the garden is the place for this maple.

Soil: Dig over the soil well before planting, add some well-rotted compost and some aged cow manure. Plant and stake, water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser and mulch with a fine pine bark mulch.
Conditions: Full sun and will benefit from afternoon shade in warmer climates

Acer palmatum dissectum Crimsonwave is an elegant, medium-sized, semi-weeping Japanese Maple. This variant features a graceful, spreading canopy with a distinctive wave-like branching pattern and a multi-branched crown, lending a sculptural quality to the landscape. Its finely dissected, lace-like foliage emerges in spring with rich burgundy to deep purple tones, creating a dramatic presence through spring and summer. Acer davidii, commonly known as Snake Bark Maple, has an erect, open, and spreading form, with green and creamy-white striated bark. Its glossy green leaves feature deep-red veins, and during autumn, the leaves turn beautiful shades of red, yellow, and orange. Delicate yellow spring flowers, winged fruits and bright autumn foliage add year round interest. A perfect specimen plant, it is ideal for a courtyard or garden setting.

Acer campestre, or the Field Maple, is a compact, slow-growing small tree with a dense round canopy and thick, fissured, corky bark. Small dark green leaves with rounded lobes appear in summer that turn a beautiful clear yellow in the autumn - providing a spectacular visual show in the garden. The delicate yellow-green flowers are produced in erect clusters as the new foliage starts to sprout. The Field Maple is popular as an ornamental and/or shade tree in parks, as well as a specimen tree in the larger garden.

Soil: Neutral to alkaline soils are preferred that are well drained.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade. Frost, wind and pollution tolerant.
