Prunus avium Sunburst Cherry

Sunburst Cherry is a productive and attractive fruiting tree that offers beauty in spring and a rewarding harvest in summer. In spring, the tree is covered with delicate white blossoms, followed by clusters of large, dark red cherries that ripen to an almost black colour. The fruit is firm, juicy and intensely sweet, making it excellent for eating fresh as well as for jams and preserves. Sunburst is considered self-fertile, meaning it can produce fruit without another cherry variety nearby. However, planting it near other sweet cherries can improve pollination and increase yields. It is a compact grower, typically reaching around 4 metres tall, which makes it well suited to backyard gardens, smaller spaces and even large containers when properly maintained. For reliable fruiting, it requires approximately 800–1000 chill hours, so it performs best in regions with cooler winters that provide sufficient cold dormancy.
