Small russet-brown fruits, about the size of a pea, develop after flowering. While not edible for people, they are highly attractive to birds and often remain on the branches into winter, providing a valuable food source for wildlife. As autumn arrives, the lush green leaves transform into vibrant shades of red, orange, purple, and burgundy, delivering outstanding seasonal interest. The pear tree is endowed with beautiful blossoms during spring, followed by glossy leaves in summer, and a bounty of juicy sweet fruit in autumn. Elegant, elongated russet-brown pears with rich, sweet, slightly grainy flesh to enjoy fresh, baked or poached. Always plant more than one variety for cross-pollination.

Pyrus communis Josephine De Malines Pear is an excellent heirloom pear for the home garden. This variety produces heavy crops of small and mouth-watering greenish-yellow fruits with a sweet lightly perfumed, buttery white flesh in late March to early April. Josephine De Malines is delicious eaten fresh off the tree, and ideal for preserving, and cooking. Suggested pollinators are Packham’s Triumph and Baby Face. Fertilise when planting and again after new growth appears, and prune  when planting to encourage new growth.
