Conditions: Full to part shade. Hydrangeas do not like hot, direct sunlight so plant with morning sunlight and partial shade in the later parts of the day.

Magnolia Susan brings a unique floral display to the garden during winter and spring. Large deep purple-pink buds open into pale pink two-tone blooms, with a slight twist to each petal to give a sense of movement. Autumn-winter is the best time to plant magnolia Susan before leaf growth begins. Susan makes a good specimen plant in beds and borders. Ideal for growing in containers.

Koelreuteria paniculata Golden Rain tree is an elegant, slow-growing small tree. It has serrated, green leaves and branches that droop at the ends creating a slight weeping effect. The foliage turns bronze to gold in autumn and is held on the tree until quite late in the season. In summer, drupes of bright yellow flowers are produced, followed by papery lantern-like seed pods that hang from the tree in large clusters. In maturity, the grey-brown bark develops a furrowed appearance and the tree becomes more round with an overall flat canopy.

Loved for both its bark and foliage, Prunus serrula Tibetica, or Tibetan Cherry, will make a magnificent addition to your landscape, all year round. On its outside, the bark will be a rich mahogany shade, before peeling to reveal shades of honey and cinnamon. It will illuminate beautifully under the sun, but also brighten up your garden on the dullest of days! Similar to the foliage seen on a willow tree, the leaves are mid-green but will offer a lovely show of yellow in the autumn. In spring, bowl-shaped white blossoms will also appear, followed by red berries much loved by birds. Perfect for the average garden, this cherry will be a great single specimen focal point.

Soil: Fertile, free-draining soil. If the soil is not free-draining, plant the tree in a raised mound of soil and compost mix, to prevent water logging.

Robinia Casque Rouge is a spectacular tree, widely grown for its delicate and perfumed blooms. Dark green, bronze-tipped foliage provides a strong contrasting backdrop to the abundant, crimson-purple flowers. The strong-growing, large-leafed tree will look spectacular as a feature tree or as a welcoming entrance along driveways. A feed of potassium in early autumn will enrich the colour and increase the size of the flowers.

Pyrus Chanticleer is one of the most popular ornamental pear trees, prized for its elegant, upright form, spectacular spring flowers, and brilliant autumn colour. Its naturally narrow, columnar habit makes it an excellent choice for gardens, driveways, streetscapes, and landscapes where space is limited. In spring, the tree is covered in masses of crisp white blossoms that create a stunning floral display before the glossy green foliage emerges. Small russet-brown fruits, about the size of a pea, develop after flowering.
