Prunus cerasifera syn Pissardi Nigra, commonly known as Purple Leaf Flowering Plum, is a striking ornamental deciduous tree valued for its deep purple foliage and beautiful spring blossoms. Although sometimes mistakenly referred to as a cherry, it is actually a form of cherry plum grown primarily for its dramatic foliage and seasonal display. In spring, the tree produces masses of delicate single pale pink flowers that appear along the bare branches before or as the new leaves emerge. The fresh foliage begins green but quickly matures to a rich purple-black, creating a bold contrast in the garden throughout the warmer months. This dark colouring makes it particularly effective as a feature tree or when planted against lighter foliage plants. Purple Leaf Flowering Plum forms a small to medium-sized tree with an upright, rounded habit, making it suitable for smaller gardens, avenues, or as a standout specimen in mixed plantings.
