Carpobrotus rossii

Carpobrotus rossii, commonly known as Karkalla or Native Pigface, is a hardy coastal groundcover prized for its brilliant purple to pink flowers and easy-care nature. This spreading perennial succulent produces masses of large, silky, daisy-like blooms from spring through summer, creating a spectacular display over an extended period. Its fleshy foliage provides excellent ground coverage and thrives in coastal conditions. A valuable bush food plant, the leaves have a salty, crunchy flavour and can be eaten fresh, steamed or pickled. The plant also produces deep red, edible fruits with a sweet, fig-like flavour and salty tang, which can be used to make jams and chutneys. Karkalla is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, native landscapes and low-maintenance groundcover planting.

Soil: Well-drained soil, from clay loam to sandy.
Conditions: Full sun. Drought, salt and somewhat frost resistant.
