The Tamarillo tree forms a single upright trunk with lateral branches. The fragrant flowers are pink-white and form clusters of 10 to 50 flowers. They produce 1-6 egg-shaped fruits - coloured red, orange or yellow - with 1 to 6 firm textured fruits per cluster. Cross-pollination seems to improve fruit creation, reaching peak production after 4 years. Tamarillos are a versatile ingredient in salads, fruit salads, chutneys, savoury pastes, mueslis, and desserts.
