This slender deciduous tree is famed for its weeping soft habit and papery peeling bark. Its silvery-white bark is punctuated with black fissures that feel rough to the touch. The white bark reflects light, brightening and bringing out the detail in surrounding plantings. Silver Birch is an excellent tree to feature in a group planting or as a striking specimen tree. It provides a pleasing focal point with an underplanting of bulbs. Elegant branches are slightly weeping in habit with light green leaves which turn yellow in autumn.
Betula pendula alba are good neighbours, with relatively open canopies allowing the sun to get through to the other plants around them. During the warmer months, Silver Birch has rich green foliage that shifts to brilliant yellow in autumn, before leaf drop in the winter.
