Acacia mearnsii - Black Wattle - is an attractive medium-sized, leguminous, nitrogen-fixing tree that is covered in abundant blooms of sweetly scented, fluffy pale yellow flowers from September to December. A background of olive green fern-like foliage and dark, rough-barked trunk create great contrast. It is a useful shade tree for stock, for erosion control, or for re-conditioning soil. With its fast growth rate, it can be used as a colonizing plant to provide protection as the understory establishes, particularly in areas where extreme wind, heat or frost are present.
Soil: Grows in most soil types, including nutrient-poor soils.
Conditions: Full sun or part shade. Frost, drought, and coast tolerant.
