Ruscus hypoglossum is a hardy, evergreen shrub native to the Middle East. Also known as the Insect Plant, it has tiny green and purple flowers in the middle of its spiky leaves - which are actually stems -looking for all the world like little bugs. Another colloquial name for the plant is the Spineless Butcher's Broom because, in days gone by, the mature spiky branches of the plant were bundled and used as brooms by butchers to clean their chopping blocks! It forms an impressive mass and will grow in difficult spots where few other plants thrive and will excel in a pot, on a shady verandah or even indoors.
If there are male and female plants, showy red berries will form from the flowers.
Soil: All soils except waterlogged.
Conditions: Full sun to heavy shade. Frost, drought and coastal tolerant
Size: Height 0.80m x width 0.80m
