The plant has prickly leaves about 8 cm long and produces delicate white five-petalled flowers through much of the year. These flowers are followed by large raspberry-like fruit up to around 25 mm in size. The berries are bright red and slightly larger than common raspberries, with a sharper, more intense berry flavour. Atherton Raspberry usually fruits through summer and autumn, though in warmer parts of Australia it can produce berries almost year-round. The fruit is ready to pick when it comes away easily from the plant with a gentle touch. Native raspberries are vigorous growers and can spread readily if left unchecked. Growing them in a container is a good way to keep them contained, while planting them in the ground suits larger gardens or properties where they have room to spread.
